Saturday, March 28 - Dirty Martini followed by The Backstabbers (both Upstate, SC)

Dirty Martini is a vocal trio that has made a name for themselves at the Brown Street Club by playing jazz favorites from the early years. They have a way of turning our club into a listening room similar to those of the great American jazz age. Come early, grab a table and a bite to eat, sit back and just let your mind wander! Show starts at 6:30pm, http://dirtymartinijazz.com/

Debuting in 2007, The Backstabbers have over 50 years of combined playing experience. Based out of Spartanburg, Greenville, and Simpsonville, the band has become a recognized live band in the upstate. Showman personality, irrepressible enthusiasm and raw talent help make the band a visual as well as an audible experience. After many years on the road, keyboardist/vocalist Michael Blythe brings a jazzy pop-rock feel, while guitarist Gary Richie bring an old school jazz/rock attitude to the sound. Years of holding down the bass in various church groups gives Chris Alexander plenty of room to get funky. Keeping the rhythmic pace, Tez Sherard is a young powerhouse behind the drums. Show starts at 10:00pm.

Koko Taylor at the Peace Center - April 17th

Koko Taylor, a true legend called the "Queen of the Blues" by the Boston Globe, is coming to the Peace Center on April 17th. Truly original, Taylor is sassy, soulful, and blessed with a powerful voice built to belt out the blues.

Koko Taylor and Her Blues Machine

Peace Center - Greenville, SC

Friday, April 17th, 2009; 8:00pm

$20, $30, $40

Tickets: 864-467-3000 or 1-800-888-7768

About Koko Taylor

"Blues is my life," says Grammy Award-winning blues singer Koko Taylor, Chicago's - and the world's - undisputed Queen of the Blues. "It's a true feeling that comes from the heart, not just something that comes out of my mouth. Blues is what I love, and singing the blues is what I always do."

With her first album in seven years, the aptly titled Old School (AL 4915), Taylor once again shows the world what she does so well. From foot-stomping barnburners to powerful slow blues, Koko proves in an instant that her blues are joyous and life -affirming, powerful, and soul-stirring. With Old School, Taylor brings it all back home, supported by a band of veteran musicians and young revivalists. Singing like she did for Chess Records early in her career, Taylor belts out a set of material that could easily have topped the blues charts in the 1950's, and will certainly reach the top of the blues world today.

Live, she simply cannot be matched in her power and raw talent. In fact, reviews of her 2006 live performances all rave about how "The Queen" is singing better than at any other time in her long, storied career - a career that includes singing with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Plant and every other imaginable legend. She's performed in clubs, festivals and concert halls all over the world, played for two presidents, and even lent her voice and likeness (as an animated bear) to the PBS children's television program Arthur.

Why Blog?

The Brown Street Club is one of those places where the music, conversation, and events change all the time, however the atmosphere always stays the same. As most of you know we have live music five nights a week. Our schedule features local acts as well as international names. Currently we have our band schedule on our website, www.brownstreetclub.com, but we were looking for another way to bring our entertainment front and center. To which the idea of a blog came up! This blog will be a way for us to feature the bands that play our stage. Our hope is that you will get a insight into their bio, musicians, style, and sound before their show. With that said, we will also be using this blog as a way to keep you guys updated on events happening at the club. We are lucky to have a space that allows such diversity in entertainment, so keep an eye out for some awesome events we have planned for the year! We also encourage you to use this blog as a forum, let us know what you think of the music we feature, we like to hear your feedback.

Thanks for continuing to support our local establishment and the local music scene!!!
